burning a vcd without using a cd

okay, so first off I'm a cheap bastard, and I don't want to go in search of 800mb blank cds. I want to use nero(or any other program) and create all the vcd files in a folder on my hard drive. the reason I want to do that is because I don't want the video on a cd and I don't want to have it as a vcd. afterwards, I would be converting it to avi and drastically cutting down the filesize (almost in half) by using divx rather than having 1.2 gb worth of mpg files. can it be done?

    "can it be done?"

Sure. All you have to do is rename each of the AVSEQ001.DAT files to individually unique names...

I'm talking about downloading a vcd (bin and cue files) and making nero "burn" it to my hard drive and then I could take the dat files and do with them what I want.

place the cue/bin files as they are on your hdd (by downloading)

get yourself The DEAMON TOOLS 333 or higher version.

load the cue/bin files into a virtual drive that you can create with
        The DEAMON TOOLS 333.

browse your virtual drive and find the movie file
        named AVSEQ001.DAT or AVSEQ001.MPG
just drag and drop it to a folder one your hard disk.

alter the suffix if neccesary from dat to mpg....

        done!

I would also suggest ISOBuster to extract the contents of the cue/bin file.

            agreed , The Edge
but i really like the fact that I can use menues in a VCD or SVCD
image mounting them with deamon tools. and the DVDstealth mode is also fine. not mentioning copy protection emulators that
            come with Deamon tools

daemon tools works great for giving me the files I need, but whenever I got to do something with those files, whether it be drag them to my hd or watch them or anything else really, whatever program I'm using freezes. the files copy fine, then right at the end it says cannot copy, not a valid ms-dos function, and then windows explorer freezes on me. anything I can do to get rid of that little problem?

daemon tools is known to have problems if "easy cd" (roxio)
or part of it is installed to your computer. uninstall easy cd.
DT does also not support images created with easy cd.
check also if another programm has installed routines of easy cd.
lot of players and music tools that have burning capabilities
                use easycd routines.

check if you installed proper wdm drivers for the use with images
that contain music or videos. if not install or update.

use also the newest version of deamon tools, since it updates
                frequently.

If your computer freezes very often when playing back vcds
svcds try to access the moviefile (AVSEQ001.xx) directly by
browsing your virtual drive. (of course you will not be able to use
                eventually included menues then )

if this all does not help give alcohol 120% a try.

                good luck!

I agree shiny#3. Roxio and Daemon doesn't match (sad
but true ) But Alcohol 120% has got averything that DT
has plus some "bonuses" so I'd go for an Uninstall of DT
                  and Install A120% annyway.
Never had probs with A120 and Roxio.
