Just after some advice from experts

Hey ,

Anyway i will get straight to the point i can use flaskmpeg and xmpeg fairly well and i can make decent divx movies but im not that happy with the picture im getting its pretty clear but ive seen other rips that were clearer

So im just wondering what the experts use

what programs ?
what codec they find best ?

and any imfomation on how to get the clearest picture would be great

Xmpeg/Flask is old hat at this stage.

To get the clearest picture you need to forget about Flasking it to VCD (MPEG1...320X240 Resolution) or even SVCD (MPEG2 480X480 resolution) and make it a DVD (MPEG2 720X480 Resolution)....but your file size will be too large to burn to a CD. You'll have to pick up a DVD Burner to get it off your machine ( seen them as low as $100 for an internal.) To make an exact copy (to get as good a picture as source) set your ripper for "enable streams" and adjust it so you get one big VOB. In TMPGenc go to File>>MPEG Tools>>Demultiplex and load VOB...double click video stream and save it...double click audio stream and save it. Then go back to File>>MPEG Tools>>Simple Multiplex...select MPEG2 Program VBR...load saved video stream and audio stream in source window and hit start. Voila...and exact copy on your HDD.

Gknot seems really difficult to use even if i follow the tutorial i still get really lost there alot i dont understand , all im after is ripping a dvd and converting it into divx around 750mg
with nice clear picture

im use to just opening up the ifo and chooseing dimensions then codec and audio codec and pressing flask or encode lol im in a way im kinda a n00b so i guess you have to tell me were to start ?

These BASIC steps will get you started.
Download the GordianKnot package

1. Decrypt DVD to harddrive. Guide

2. Open the first VOB file in DVD2AVI and save project.

3. You should now have a *.dv2 file and a *.AC3 file(sound)

4. Open Besweet and encode sound to mp3 Guide.

5. Now, open this *.dv2 file in GordianKnot and select your mp3 file under "Audio A"

6. Set the size you want (700mb for one cd for example) and what codec you want. Make sure you have the codec installed.

7. Now under resolution drag the slider so the "Bits/(pixal*frame)" box reads near 0.200 (trust me)

8. Click on "Save and encode" and add job to queue.


That's pretty much it. This is from the top of my head (in work ) so bare with me. There are loads of guides to be found. Trust me when I say ditch flask/xmpeg.

ok im up to step 3 i got the dv2 file but not the ac3 file are there settings i have to set in dvd to avi ?

OK, set the audio to track 1 and resave the project again.
That should demux the sound (*.ac3)

man ive been trying this stuff for hours and i was starting to get somewhere i got right up to the end and things in gknot were wierd and i stuffed a few settings up so i tryed reinstalling the rippack and now i have all these errors i think im just going to have to wait till they bring out a all in one program this stuff is just to hard

Ok i did my first rip but the movie size came out 975 mg instead of 700 ? so i have no idea what im doing wrong ive followed all the guides so any help would be great

Can you post the log file made by GordianKnot?
It's will be in the GordianKnot folder.
Maybe we can spot what went wrong?
