    Problem with AVI file

    Hello,

I'm sorry, if this question was already answered. But I couldn't find it.

I have PII 266MHz, 64MB RAM, 8MB graphic card and Win2000 Professional. I would like to play avi files.
I installed Windows Media Player 9 and DivX4 codecs. But video and sound doesn't work.
I installed BSPlayer but it doesn't work - some hardware problem.
I installed Playa - video and sound is OK, but I cannnot play video with subtitles.

Please, I will be happy, if you help me.
    Thank you
    Best regards,
    Vaclav

Install FFDShow and set it to handle the various DivX revisions and XviD files.

For audio, you need to find out what compression is used for that particular file (Virtualdub's File Information can help here). MP3 and AC3 are normally used with .avi files.

    Regards.

        Hi,

I tried to installed FFDShow. During instalation it wrote something like "Missing (some).dll file". Video didn't work.

I also installed DivX4 and DivX5. But it still didn't work. So I installed DivX3.11, but still the same.

So I decided to uninstall all codecs and then I installed DivX3.11 codec.

Whoopee! Now video play. It isn't excellent but (you will be surprised) video play fluently and also subtitles are available.

So, what can I do, if I will want to play DivX4 or higher? Because if I install DivX4 or DivX5 codecs, I suppose DivX3 will not work again.

By the way, W2K works fluently on this hardware.

        Thanks,
        Vaclav

having got one install working maybe upgrades will work properly. how about setting a restore point as you're using W2000 and then trying?
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

            Uninstall all codecs.

            Install 3.x
Install 4.x (when it asks you if you wish to use it to playback all 3.x content say no)
            Install 5.x
            Install XVID
Install AC3 Filter (or you can use the AC3 codec from the Nimo codec pack)

You're done - pretty much everything should play on your pc now.

            Cod
