Can I fix a regular tabletop DVD Player to be region-free?

My guess is that it is not possible because there is no computer access to the firmware and therefore no alterations are possible. But I'm just asking to be sure.

I think that expensive Region Free DVD Players are available, but they would cost more than two players for the two regions that I need...

Any suggestions? Or recommended website or forum about Region Free Players?
