VHS to DVD on a PC?

I'm sure that all my friends would be interested in backing up their fantastic home videos (VHS) onto DVD. I have no idea whether this is possible. Is it?

We've been making VHS digital on PC's for quite a while. My ancient LAVision Dazzle device did it for me in 1996 on a Win95. Nowadays there are numerous cards and external devices to do just this. Read the threads and make a choice.
