Too new to know where to begin

Please don't send me back to the "new users start here" post. My head is spinning, and even that post is beyond me right now.

Look - it's real simple. I have a dvd-rom drive in my windows xp computer. I bought the pc used and replaced the cd-rom with the dvd-rom myself. If there was supposed to be any software that should have come with it I'm totally ignorant of it.

When I put a dvd movie in to play it says it can't play it. ("A compatible dvd decoder is not installed on your computer")

Somehow I think I need more than a decoder. Do I also need a player? Can I download what I need for free or is this going to kill Christmas for me?????

Lets start here. Thanks for your help and understanding.

PowerDVD or WinDVD are good DVD player software.

They don't come free, but don't cost much either.

    Regards.

I downloaded the WinDVD trial version and it worked, so now I know where I stand. Thanks all...
