playing subtitles with the playa??

How do i play subtitles with the playa. i have tried putting the avi and subtitles in the same folder. i have the same name on both files. Can someone please explain step by step because i don't think i am going to figure it out.

If u have the subtitles in *.sub format I think u can't
Use PowerDivx. It's easier

Thanks. I downloaded power divx great player but i have the same problem with this as i had with micro dvd. It doesn't play right with tv out and in full screen mode. MDVD gave an error something to do with no overlay being detected. I found the playa worked fine. That is why i need to know what format my subtitles should be in
