      1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

      2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

      3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

          Setarip:
I have a similar problem with audio. Using # 1 DVD ripper I successfully ripped an AVI file which plays fine using Windows Media Player. But when I import into Adobe Premier and drag to the timeline for editing I loose audio. Back on Dec 3 you helped Protenon solve a similar problem. I tried the suggestlions you gave him at that time but they did not work for me. I believe my problem has to do with audio compression and how adobe handles it. In VirtualDUb The audio stream compression is Fraunhofer IIs MPEG Layer 3 Codec. Any help you can suggest here will be appreciated. Thanks. Phil

            To Mondo

The information you've posted indicates that your file has nothing to do with DivX, or any other compressed form of .AVI. The file appears to be an MPEG2-SuperVideoCD ("SVCD").

Try using a software DVD player, such as WinDVD, to play it properly on your PC...

              To cyklopps

I'm assuming your .MP3 audiostream is Variable Bitrate ("VBR") - and that this may be the cause of your problem.

              Try the following:

Using VirtualDubMOD to Convert "VBR" .MP3 to Uncompressed .WAV

              1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDubMOD (a different program than the standard VirtualDub)

              2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy"

              3) From the "Streams" dropdown menu, select "Stream List" - and rightclick on the audio stream, then select "Full Processing Mode" - then click on "OK"

              4) From the "File" dropdown menu, save .AVI with a new filename

                Setarip:
This did not work. But before I go any further in this direction, perhaps you have other suggestions on accomplishing what I want to do. I have lots of VHS tapes of home movies that I burned to DVD's on a Panasonic recorder than can also burn DVD's. I want to get this stuff into my PC so I can edit with Premier and then get it back onto new DVD's using the DVD burner in my computer. Last night a friend warned me that doing it this way would lead to quality degredation of my final product. Another way I have successfully done this to go from VHS tapes to my dv camcorder and then to the PC. But I wasn't sure whether my Camcorder would hold up to many hours of such transfers! Do you know of any better way to do what I want to do? Editing programs other then Adobe. Rippers other then # 1 DVD Ripper.
Otherwise I will continue to try and solve this problem of Premier loosing the audio when I try and edit repped files from # 1 DVD Ripper. Thanks again for your help in this matter. Phil

as soon as you are in your stream list menu
right click on your audio stream and change in the compression menue to PCM Uncompressed (wav) then follow setarips advice further

Thanks for reply. I tried what you suggested and still no audio when I try to edit in Premier. I did check the audio properties on the file after I imported into Premier and came up with the following. In the file that was changed by VIrtualDub Mod here is the information shown:
                    Audio Track 1
                    Size is 12.91 MB Bytes
                    Rate is 44100 Smaples/Sec Stereo
                    Sample Size is 16 bits
                    Interleave 1 Frame
Additional Information VirtualDub Mod 1.5.10.1Build 2366/Release
Out of curiosity, I took a look at the Audio properties of a file I
know works in Premier and noted the following differences .
Interleave of the file that works is 2 Frames and the Rate is
                    32000 samples/sec.
                    Any new ideas? Phil
