Best codec for multimedia cd-rom?

Multimedia CD-ROM! Who makes them anymore?!

True, but i'm after some opinions.

I recently made a cd-rom with a video in it, the video was encoded from premier with the intel indeo 4.5 codec.

This rendered an avi file, that was not overly small in file-size but it was of respectable video quality. This file played fine on most 'newer' computer systems (pentium 3+ win. xp) but on older computers / OS video would not play back with in the multimedia interface, but sometimes would play back via windows media player.

So my question is, do people have an opinion on the best codec for multimedia cd-rom videos? Based on quality/file size/audience etc...

I'm told mpeg is the way to go, but does this mean i have to have Quicktime accompanying the project? Is there an mpeg format playable via windows media player?

Standard MPEG-1 is one of the default formats available for playback under Windows Media Player...

Hi,

Nah i just wanted to leave it as a file for use on pc's. As it is a part of a m.media presentation, distibuted for use on home pc's it needs to be a format that is accessable by the majority of the audience.

i'd do it in mpeg, the quality is enough for a "multimedia cdrom" i think

No - you should apply an ".MPG" extension...

Ok, i am exporting out of premier with the "microsoft MPEG-4 v1 video codec" but it still gives a default avi extention.

should i change the extention manually? is this even the right codec type?

you should apply an ".MPG" extension

'.mpe' and '.mpeg' extensions are also possible.

You can't use that codec if you want to create an MPEG-1 file. I'd strongly suggest you read the Premier documentation...

ok, thanks guys, i think have it sorted now.

I exported as an avi then used another application to encode it as an MPEG-1. This made the file size more economical _and_ it even works as a vcd (cool!)
