hi my idea of good compression and good quality is ending up with an mpeg that is no larger than 160mb the way i do this is 2 use flask mpeg and a bit rate calculater in the calculater i choose the option fit 2 1 700mb cd and get a bitrate this bitrate is then entered in the video section of flask codec options.
after converting to avi with flask i then use tmpgenc to make a svcd wich then tydies the picture a bit and keeps me 2 two cd's and have and have a great film.

    hope this helps

For newbies, I would suggest using Flask and DivX4 (2-pass option, of course).

      Steps:
      1. Use a DVD ripper to rip and unscramble DVD .vob and .ifo files into your HD.
      2. Install necessay codec (DivX4 & maybe Radium MP3)
      3. Use Flask to open DVD. Select the appropriate .ifo file, language and subtitle, if you wish.
      4. Select your codec in Options --> output format options --> video tab --> DivX Codec 4.x --> configure. Choose the 2-pass, first-pass option.
      5. In the Global Projects option, crop & resize and deinterlace (if necessary) your video. Once you're set, just start the conversion. It'll start analysing the video and creating the log file needed for the second pass. The AVI file you create will not be playable at this stage.
      6. When done, you change the codec configuration to 2-pass, second pass and start the conversion again. You can overwrite the AVI file created earlier. This time you get the AVI file you need.

All explained in oversimplified steps. For more details, look at the articles by Nicky.

p.s. Most experienced users will not be using Flask and are divided between codec version 3 & 4. But then again, beginners should only start using the easier-to-use programs first.
