Video quality

Hello,

a couple of weeks ago I've started learning ripping DVD's to create VCD's.

I only have one DVD to practise, it's Saving Private Ryan.

First I've followed Nicky's guide.
Now I'm using this methode:
Ripping with Smartripper; converting with DVD2AVI; GraphEdit for Audio (almost perfect Audio);to get subtitles first VFAPIConv and then VirtualDub with VobSub; TMPGEnc to convert.

This give me a reasonable VCD with Dolby Surrond and subtitles in Dutch.

The only thing what's bother me is the Video quality.

So the question is how can I raise the VCD quality.

Make a SVCD or use variable bitrate.

I want to play the movie on my Sony DAV-500 which do not support SVCD, only VCD.

So, the variable bitrate, thus this also apply to VCD?

I rerad in this forum that the sony-dvd-player is not very good even at vcd, but maybe it works if you makee an non-standard-vcd with higher bitrate or variable bitrate. I haven't installed TMPEGEnc at the moment, but I think the option also works with vcds.

Vcd is not capable of variable bitrate. From my limitted experience the only way to increase the quality of the vcd is to encode using the very high quality settind in tmpg. The thing is with vcd, it only gets so good. It is not and will not be dvd or divx quality. I have also heard that sony's arent the best for vcd playback. Maybe think about dropping $100 in a Apex or minitek for a cheapie dvd player??

when you go to encode with tmpg..use a template from the template folder.i dont know if it came with mine or i downloaded this one but there is one that makes the video bitrate go up and the audio bitrate go down..making the video look better.my template says video cd 1246kpbs(ntsc).
if you wanna do the bitrates yourself just make the audio and the video bitrate equal a total of 1374 kpbs.
for example my template says 1246 for the vid and 128 for the audio..=1374....you can probably make one with 1278 for the video and 96 for the audio. also try cd-rw's in your player to see if it helps with compatability.some players read vcd on a cdr but not too good..sometimes those same dvd players will read the cd-rw better.
