    Problem playing "avi" files

I have a problem playing ".avi" files on my "XP Home SP2"
PC that are XviD MPEG-4 encoded. The video shows a dark
blur. If I right click within the picture, I get a clear
picture in the area below where the curser is. If I then
left click the picture (to get rid of the right click
menu window), the picture goes back to a blur. This
happens with all players (e.g. Media Player, WinAMP).

I replaced the XviD codec (I believe) by downloading the
    latest codec from
    http://www.moviecodec.com/download/tools.shtml and
    following the installation instructions.

I also checked all the "avi" files that I'm having
trouble with on my laptop and they play just fine.

Any help would be much appreciated.

"I have a problem playing ".avi" files on my "XP Home SP2""

Load the AVI file into "VirtualDubMod" ("File" > "Open Video File"). Then go to "File" > "File Information" and post the information listed in both the video and audio sections of the dialog box, or post a "Screenshot" of the information.

Did you download the AVIcodec v1.104? You need the XviD MPEG-4 codec.

For playback, download and install the FFDShow filter...

If anything, I probably have too many codecs on my machine. There may be some conflicts. I'd love to do a clean up, if you think I should, but I'd need some instructions.

              Attachment shows codecs installed.

              Thanks!

                Bingo!

                Many thanks.

I would still like to clean out unneeded codecs ... if that's desirable.
