Very large VAI files for DVD burn

    hi guys -
am here again for a newbie question.
got this 13GB AVI file i downloaded from my camcorder into my pc - i.e. my son's bday party.
what's the best way to burn this into a dvd.
1.0 cut into pieces, with what?
2.0 or compressed into another file format, with what?

any good tacher out there that has a complete tutorial?

    thanks.

    Follow this procedure:

    1. Convert the AVI (DivX or Xvid)/mpeg file(s) to a DVD compliant mpeg-2 file(s) using "TMPGEnc" or "TMPGEnc Plus". Use the DVD template (NTSC or PAL) form the "Project Wizard" to help you accomplish the task. If you have an mpeg file that is already DVD-compliant, then skip directly to step 2.

    2. Then use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (different than "TMPGEnc") to author the newly created mpeg-2 into a DVD-related file structure (.IFO, .BUP, .VOB). As an alternative, you can use "DVDLab" to author as well.

    3. If the combined filesize of the project exceeds 4.37 Gig, use "DVD Shrink" or similar transcoding program to compress.

    4. Use "Nero" or similar burning program to burn onto a DVD (r, rw) disk.

You may discover that TMPGEnc "gags" on such a large .AVI. If this proves to be the case, first split the .AVI into smaller files as follows:

Splitting with VirtualDub (or any of its variants) or NanDub

1)Load your original (DivX-compressed or otherwise) .AVI into VirtualDub or NanDub
      2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
      3) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
      4) Move slider to approximate halfway point
      5) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
      6) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End'
      7) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie1of2.avi").
      8) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
      9) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Move to End"
      10) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End"
      11) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie2of2.avi").

If the two new files still prove to be more than TMPGEnc can handle, repeat the procedure to split each of the two new files...

you too are really cool.have tried ormonde's approach on smaller AVI file. great!

now, have tried setarip's approach on larger file size, then from there i don't know where to go. after breaking down into pieces, tring to use TMPGenc should i use the DVD Shrink then. aftwerwhich, how can i rejoin the pieces into 1 dvd-compliant file for burning using my nero.
        thanks again for any help.

"how can i rejoin the pieces into 1 dvd-compliant file for burning using my nero"

          1) Use "TMPGEnc" (or "TMPGEncPlus") to convert the .AVI (DivX-compressed or otherwise) to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this

          2) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish) - ***IMPORTANT - Load ALL of the "pieces" into ONE track...

**If the combined filesize of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink (or similar) to compress
