Camcorder as an analog to digital converter?

Hi, basically what I want to do is copy video from my VCR to my miniDV camera and then to my computer.

The problem is that I'm not sure if my camera can do that. The camera to computer (via firewire) I've used already, it's the VCR to camera part I'm not sure about. The manual doesn't say anything about doing this.

I have a JVC miniDV camera (GR-DVL520U). It has two analog connections one says "AV" the other says "edit". They are both 3.5 mini-plug, I think.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question:
Can I just hook up my miniplug-to-RCA cable into the "out" of my VCR and into one of these?

Oh, one more thing. I forgot, the camera also has an S-video hookup.

Can't you simply hookup your VCR to your computer?

How? I don't have RCA on my computer. I don't want to spend money on a video capture device if the camera is going to work.

You need a analog to digital converter box. Check out the Canopus line of products. I use the ADVC-100; makes it very easy to record from VCR or videocam.
