    help on dvd copying?

    Hi,

Im new to this site and new to the whole dvd copying. And to be honest i aint got a clue! I have downloaded dvd shrink - which i can use and i can copy dvds. However-

All my films i get are in a format that cannot be put onto dvd!! they are?:

AVI, MPEG, Div X, and Xvid i think

How would i convert or copy these files to dvd so they are watchable on a dvd player? I can only seem to copy them as data.

wat programs would i need and that? Any help or information would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Thanks everyone

    Paul

For standalone DVD compatibility your files must be mpeg2 so AVI must be converted. Most DVD authoring apps will do this. DivX and XviD have their own sub-forum here. Some of the latest DVD players are in fact DivX (MPEG4) compatible.
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

"AVI, MPEG, Div X, and Xvid i think. How would i convert or copy these files to dvd"

One set of procedures (other posters may/probably will suggest alternative methods) would be:

      1) Use "TMPGEnc" (or "TMPGEncPlus") to convert the .AVI (DivX-compressed, XviD-compressed, or otherwise) to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this

      2) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish)

**If the combined filesize of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink (or similar) to compress

If your O/S is either Win2000 or WinXP, TMPGEnc DVD Author can also burn your DVD. Otherwise, use NERO to burn in "DVD-Video" mode
(As an alternative to "TMPGEnc DVD Author", you could use "DVDLab")

      Let us know of your success ;>}

i tired it on resident evil 2 film (Resident Evil 2 [Archangel-encode].avi)

I used TMPGEnc - V.2.56 to convert the file to mpeg 2 from avi. Which this worked successfully!

I then opened TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 to convert the mpeg 2 to the video files ready to copy for the dvd.

I then opened Nero 6 to create the dvd which also burnt with no problems. The total size of the dvd files only came to 1.6GB.

I went downstairs expecting it to work on my home dvd player however. It read the dics ok, but the picture froze on the very start but contiuned playing the audio but no video apart from the frozen part!

What am i doing wrong and why wudnt this work? I then played the file from my hard drive on a program called VLC player which it worked, then i tired it on Media Player but it wudnt work on that!!

Im confused? Any help on how i can solve this?

PS - how do you create a dvd menu using TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6?

        Cheers for ur help!!!
        Regards, Paul

Discussion of anything to do with illicit downloaded or otherwise obtained copies of commercial movies is a violation of the rules of these forums (Particularly Rule #6)...
