    Divx and DPS Video software

    I have a 3 minute timeline which I'm outputting as an AVI using the Divx4.12 codec and at 320x240 I'm still up at 35mb. I've pushed numbers around for a few hours and I can't seem to get it down. I don't have much experience with the codec, but I've seen 405theMovie and it was 7mb for 3min, and not bad quality. Can anyone shed some light on me. Thanks, Pwinter

      Divx and DPS Video software

      Lowering the biterate did not help. What did help was removing the audio. It went from 30+MB down to 12MB. Now I have new problems.

      1. The video is jerky at 640x480 and 485kbps
      2. I need to find a way to encode the audio as MP3

      Now, I enstalled Divx5.0pro and I'm back up to 29MB!!!!! at 320x240x485kbps w/o audio.

      This is getting very frustrating.

        "I need to find a way to encode the audio as MP3"

        I gather the audio is presenlty uncompressed (PCM) .WAV. If you don't already have an MP3 codec installed, download and install the Radium MP3 codec. Then load your original .AVI (combined video/audio) into VirtualDub. Set the "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying". Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode". From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression". Select the MP3 (MPEG Layer 3) setting you prefer. Save with a new filename.

        Lte us know of your success ;>}

          Thanks for the help. I just spent the day doing tests and I'm close to getting good results. First off, I had to create an AVI from my NLE timeline using the Divx codec to give me a 3 minute, 320x240 movie at 63mb with full audio. Seems the lowest I could get it without huge loss. Is it possible that my NLE software is inhibiting the codec? It seems wierd that I have to process the AVI twice.

          Then I brought it into VirtualDub, set the Divx bitrate to 300kbps and the audio to ??????. That's where it started giving me problems. If I asked for 24bit/16kh I got an error saying "error initializing audio stream compression, the requested conversion is not possible." I had to settle for "16bit/11kh mono". The audio is muffled somewhat. It seems that the codec doesn't list 16bit/44kh stereo. I don't understand this area very much.

          Anyway, I got it down to 8mb

          The video playback stutters a little here and there, and there is some interlacing problems. Windows Media Player does a better job than the Divx Playa.

          All in all, it's getting better. I'm still using the "405theMovie" in wmv format (9mb) as a benchmark and it is way better still.
