    Anyone ??

Ok after days of reading..I think I got somewhat of an idea on this rip thing. Man I never knew backing up DVD's could be so difficult. Ok anyhow I was using just DVD shrink when found the list of "Problematic" movies. Well low and behold I have that I was trying to backup. "The Forgotten" ok so I read how to fix the problem and I get the DVDD going latest version. I follow the guides directions, no problem at all. Open with DVDshrink and I removed unwated language and 5.1 English. Burn with nero. I go to play it and it has no sound what so ever. Ok pull it back up add back 5.1 English re-burn and now has sound. I was told I could remove the 5.1 because it was useless. Is this true ?? or just a fluke ? Ok the next question...I figure ok ill just burn all DVD's using both programs..I should be allset. Im making coasters over here like a mad woman. For every DVD I "try" to burn I get 1 coaster. The next burn was "The Notebook" ran it through DVDD said it was a success..opened Shrink ..took out unwated languages..and directors comments. Burn with nero. Go to play that in the DVD player and it skips the first part of the movie and goes about 30 mins in. What happend ? Is director comments important ???? Anyone ever experiance anything like this ? And did you all make plenty of coasters to begin with ???

"I was told I could remove the 5.1 because it was useless. Is this true ?? or just a fluke ? "
You need the English 5.1 to have sound. I think you are referring to "DTS 5.1". (With DTS, you need the appropriate wiring for it to actually work.)

Basically, remove all languages that you don't want on the backup except English Dolby Digital 5.1. Then you should be ok.

"Go to play that in the DVD player and it skips the first part of the movie and goes about 30 mins in. What happend ? "
The skipping is most likely caused by poor media being used. What brand are you using? Also, what speed are you burning at? I recommend burning no faster than 4X. The faster you burn the more likely you are to get errors on the disc. (Errors = skipping or freezing)

    " Is director comments important ???? "
Directors Commentaries are just the main movie with a director or/and actor commentating on the movie as it plays. Interesting maybe the first time for about 5 min, but over all boring and no need to keep them. They are safe to remove

"did you all make plenty of coasters to begin with ???"
YEP!! Almost everyone starts out making coasters! It's almost impossible not to. That is how I (and the rest of us) learned! It is normal. Best thing to do is buy some DVD-RW or DVD+RW disc (whichever is compatible with your DVD player) and burn first with them, cause if messes up. You can erase them and start over. Saving you money! (And possibly a mild headache)

"I went to a computer show and grabed a 50 pack of DVD-R for $22"
That explains your results! Please, don't feel bad! You thought it was a great deal, who wouldn't? I can honestly say almost everyone has done the exact same thing! I mean, for the money, you think your getting a great deal. I recommend getting Ritek Ridata or Verbatim brand media. (I use Verbatim, and have yet to make a coaster.)

Please take a look at this site as it explains the difference in media, etc. - http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

"Max speed of the cd is 8x and thats what it is burning at. On burn option it has 1.0x (1385 kb/s) 2.0x (2770 kb/s) 2.4x (3324 kb/s) what should I turn it to ? I have a lite on burner 16X."
With the blank DVD in the burner, there should be an option for 4X. (If there is no blank DVD recordable in the burner at the time you are looking at the speeds, it will show the lowest possible. Cause it doesn't know yet what speed media you are going to use.)

Here is the "Specs" of that DVD player I got from Walmart.com:

        Description

Emerson DVD/VCR Combo Player, EWD2004 delivers two media formats in one compact package
DVD, DVD-R/-RW, CD, CD-R/-RW playback; VHS recording and playback
        Auto power off
        Zoom
        Slow motion
        Frame-advance
        Component Video Out
        S-Video output
        Front Audio/Video inputs
        Digital Video Out
        Virtual surround system
        Built-in calendar
        Parental lock blocks inappropriate content

As you can see, it only plays the -R and -RW format disc's.

        "The part I removed was AC3 5.1-ch English "
You need that language, as I am assuming you speak "English" ? lol

It would really help me if you could find out the model # of your Lite On DVD burner. - If you right click on "My Computer", then left click on "Properties". Then on the window that pops up, click the "Hardware" tab, on the "Hardware" tab, there will be a button in the middle named "Device Manager". Click that and it will bring up the "Device Manager" window. There you need to click the little + sign next to "DVD/CD-ROM drives". Then it should tell you the brand and model number.

Also, take a look at this review I found on the DVD player you are using. It describes exactly what you are experiencing.

would this be good media choice ?

After reading that media info omg did I get ripped. I guess I will use the ceap crud I have until it is gone, knowing im gonna get coasters. But might as well try and squeeze a few good ones out of it so that I dont loose all my money.

Go here for some review of this product from people who have the same burner. This site will also tell you what brand of media people have successfully and unsuccessfully used. - http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters....ist=2#comments

Memorex is not one of the best in my opinion but, a few people have had good luck with it. My suggestion would be to buy in small quantity (like a 5 pack or individual) and burn with it till you have success with a certain brand. When you find out which media works the best for you, then buy a large spindle of that media so you are not out alot of money if they don't work.

Also make sure your firmware is up to date on your burner, as that will ensure more media compatibility.

Go here to read about "firmware" and what it is and what it does: http://www.feurio.com/English/faq/fa...firmware.shtml

Download "Flashmans" Firmware detect program to see what firmware you currently have: http://flashman.rpc-1.com/Firmware/D...are_detect.exe

First try to go to the manufactures website (Lite On) and see if there is an update there for your burner. If its not there, you can always go here for the latest firmware upgrade: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1934

                      "THANKS !! "
                      You're Very Welcome!

"I didnt realize there was so much that I needed to know about backing up my DVD's."
It does seem over whelming at first, but once you do a few successfully and get a pattern established. Its a breeze!

Alot of this information is just "1 time" information, meaning you only need to know it just to get started.
