Is the DivX ACM Codec legal?

Not that I'm particularly concerned, but when I was installing VirtualDub, it threw up a warning that the DivX codec installed on my system was an illegal binary hack of some MS product.

    Is this true?

    Cheers....

    Yes, it's true.

But who would really care about it if you're using it to rip DVDs you don't own, which in the first place is an illegal activity too.

If you're really concerned about it, use 4.12 or the newer 5.x codecs. These are completely legitimate.

Ah I see, so the original codecs were 'illegal', but the recent versions are legit. Cool. It's odd that VirtualDub still throws up the warning though even with v.5.

Incidentally, I don't use the codec for DVD ripping, rather I'm experimenting with video capture at the moment (editing old SVHS tapes)
But I'm sure i'll get a DVD drive sooner or later....

      Cheers for the info.
