Audio format problem while joining 2 AVI's

    Hi all,

While trying to joing 2 AVI files with VirtualDub (after reading and following one of the guides in Nicky's site, of course!) , I got the message 'cannot join - incompatible data formats'.

I was able to use VirtualDub to change the video formats to match each other but ran into problems with the audio.

I found the audio format of one of the files to be 44khz stereo while the other file had audio of 22khz mono. I can't reformat the 22khz to 44khz (on one of my tries the sound ended up playing at twice the former speed and sounded like a chipmunk) and to go the other way is not an option! Who wants to lose quality!

Any suggestions on how best to join these 2 AVI files.

"to go the other way is not an option! Who wants to lose quality!"

Sometimes, "half a loaf is better than none" (Yevgeni Yevtushenko) ;>} If you have the need to join the files, they SHOULD have the same audio, even if it is the poorer quality of the two...

Well, since one of the 2 files is so much larger than the other one which really is only adding a tiny end piece, I therefore wanted to go with the overall higher quality of the larger file.

Rip the audio from both in virtualdub.
Load them into Goldwave, resample and join.
        Save as .wav
Join the video in virtualdub, with the .wav audio you made.

          Resolved!

I went into Ulead and was able to join the two files even though the audios did not match.

I had originally tried to use Ulead to work with these files but had given up when I could not trim either file prior to joining. That's what led me to VirtualDub which easily trimmed the files.

It hadn't occurred to me that Ulead might be of some help until I ran into the dead end with VirtualDub.

Thanks for your replies. Together we can do it!!
