    hardware

I was just wondering if i can get some suggestions for decent cd writers and dvd roms for use in making cd's, vcd's and dvd ripping. I am new to this whole scene and i thought that i should start with the proper equipment. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    IMHO -

Get a Plextor CD burner and Nero software (usually bundled).
Or a TEAC drive, cheaper but good.

The Ricoh combi DVD/CDR/W drives work a treat and only need one drive bay and ide channel (no master slave slow down or probs) - fully burn prooof too (Just Link).

Plus they read and write RAW which is handy for copying protected game CD's etc.

But as above anything Plextor is perfect. I can't say the same for Teac though, I've had three pass my way and none could read/write RAW fully and not very fast either.

If you wish to save money though look out for LiteOnIt drives, as I have use these without fail (they also do RAW) and use Burn Proof too. Infact I'm using a couple at the mo.
