    Problem with Sony DRU710A

I am having troubles with playing dvds on my pc. Some movies will play and some wont. Examples of some that play are Spiderman, spiderman 2, master and commander.
The ones that I am having trouble with right now are:
Hellboy 2 Disk SE Disk One, Disk 2 plays ok, Xmen 2.
I have tried these on another PC and they work fine. No scratches or marks on them.
What happens is that when I place the DVD in the drive the drive light comes on, you hear it spin and thats all it does, and while its doing that you can not get anything dvd player program to work.
    My hardware consist of:
Intel D865PERL MB, Intel 3Ghx Prescott CPU w/HT, 250Gb WD SATA drive, Kingston DDR3200 1G Ram, Sony DRU710A DVD Burner, ATI Radeon AIW 9200 AGP Video card.
My Software: Windows XP Home SP2, Windows WMP10, Intervidea Xpack, ATI Catalyst 9.03. Macafee VS9 2005.
I have reloaded everything I can think of including the OS with a fresh install . I really dont know whats wrong and don't know how to break down if its a hardware issue, software issue, media issue or all the above.
I suspect that at least on the Hellboy DVD it has something to do with the mixed content on the disk where it ask you if you want to view the items or play the disk.
I am tired of fighting this funkie a@# problem.

P.S. I also think it may be my drive because if I leave the dvd in the drive and reboot the BIOS looks for a boot disk in all drives of my pc and just hangs on the dvd drive. If I eject the disk then the pc will boot up. Now if I understand that if the drive was working right the BIOS ought to figure out that it is not a bootable disk and move on as which it does not.

    Somebody please please help me.

    Thanks!

Try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your drive (DVD-ROM or burner). Maxell makes one that retails for approximately $10US...

Its a fairly new drive and it turns out that the Sony DRU710 drive by design will not let you read certain disk. I have found several people talking about this drive being real picky about what you stick in it.
In any case I installed a DVD ROM (Works Great) drive under it to read my DVDs and I will use the Sony to Burn with.

Are the "problem" DVDs original, commmercial, PRESSED DVDs, or BURNED media?

Commercial DVD's right out of the box.

I also have a Sony DRU 710A Dual Layer DVD Burner and I too am experiencing certain problems with it. When I insert a burned movie into the device it also just spins consistently and I can not get the player to work either. I have left the DVD in there long enough and the computer is not able to read the disc. It asks for me to insert a disc even though there already is a disc inserted.

I do not have any solutions but thought that you should know that you are not the only one. I am still trying to figure it out and will keep you posted if I discover or figure anything out.

I would appreciate it, if you did the same.

              I appreciate that.
In any case my good ole HP DVD-Rom does a good job reading DVD's.

Legally, the only such limitation can be REGION designations - e.g. A burner sold in the U.S. will be set to read only Region 1 DVDs.

If, for example, yours is a burner purchased in the U.S. and it cannot read Region 1 DVDs, you should immediately return it in exchange for a new one...

ARE your "problematic" DVDs of the proper Region designation for where you live?

Yes my drive is setup for region one and the dvds are for sure region 1. All I can say is that unless that Sony is defective then it for sure doesnt like Fox-Columbia Tristar combinations.

Does it do it for all DVD disc you try, or just 1 particular movie?

Some DVDs work fine and some dont. 50/50 more or less.
All DVD's work fine on my HP Reader.

I beleive that I am going to get with Sony and persuade them to replace my drive as it could be bad. Haven't had it 6 months.

Columbia TriStar is a SONY-owned company - and has nothing to do with Fox.

What are you referring to when you speak of, "Fox-Columbia Tristar combinations"?

Didn't mean to infer that fox and sony were together, just lousy typing.
A majority of my problem disk are fox related however.

As I said before, I'd suggest you return the drive in exchange for a new one...

(I really doubt the problem has anything to do with a particular studio - Write that off to coincidence)

                              Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I am experiencing similar problems with my Sony drive which is also a burner but a different model to yours (mine's a DRU-510). In my case it appears to be movies release through Village/Roadshow. I am noticing as well that the discs are gold in colour and have been advised that this may be causing problems as it could be too reflective for the drive to read properly. The discs are for the correct region and work perfectly well in the two other computers I have.

I am also looking at getting a second DVD Rom to use to read the discs and will use the Sony drive to burn with. Any suggestions as to what the better brands of DVD Rom drives are right now would be appreciated.
