    No Sound

    Please Help!

I'm using a capture card to capture video from DVR (DVHS?) to my computer. Then I use the HDTVtoMPEG2 program to convert to MPEG. Used to play fine..NOW when I go to play the MPEG file the video is fine but there is no audio. Am I missing a setting somewhere? Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forums. What software-based player are you using to play the file?

      1) Are you SURE you captured audio, as well as video?

      2) Did you check to see that your PC's sound settings were set properly for audio-in from the source?

      3) If you play another MPEG file (that previously DID play with audio), do you have audio playback?

ormonde - thank you I do feel welcomed. I did a system recovery to try and work out any bugs- thats why I didn't respond right away. Didn't work. Not quite sure what you mean by "software - based player" unless you mean my WMP 10.

        setarip -
        1) NO I am not so sure I captured audio as well.

        2) Where do I tell that? I d-click on speaker in start tray and everthing is unmuted and volume is up - is there something else you mean by "audio-in from the source"

        3) YES...which makes me start to think I am not capturing audio..how can I tell

thank you both for your continued help

Do you have any RCA cables connecting from your VCR or DVR to your computer?
RCA cables = Red and White jacks

A quote from your initial post:

"NOW when I go to play the MPEG file the video is fine but there is no audio."

Open the original (captured) mpeg file(s) in "VirtualDubMod" ("File" > "Open Video File"). Then go to "File" > "File Information" and post everything that is listed in both the video and audio sections of the dialog box, or post a screenshot of the information.

Not quite sure what "virtualdubmod" is I think the closest I can get for you without further help is I played the MPEG file in WMP paused it went to properties & this is what it came up with:

                Length: 00:37
                Bit Rate: -
                Media Type: Video
                Video Size: 720 x 480
                Aspect Ratio: 4:3
                Audio Codec: -
Video Codec: Ligos MPEG Video Decoder

Hopefully this is the info you need
PS I just looked at the video that does have sound and under
"Audio Codec" it has "Intervideo Audio Decoder"
                Thanks so much again

Hey I was thinking since my last post:
These are the steps I take maybe that will help you
                  1) capture video through firewire using CAPDVHS program (this is in .ts file format)
                  2) convert to MPEG using HDTV2MPEG program

since I don't have anything that will play a .ts I don't know if the .ts file has sound.
Assuming it does, this Intervideo audio decoder is not working either when I convert to MPEG or when I play in WMP (but the other file plays-so probably not the latter). Okay I thought I had a thought now I'm more confused, sorry. You guys probably know what I'm talking about more than I do.

"this Intervideo audio decoder is not working either when I convert to MPEG or when I play in WMP"

Download and install the "FFDirectShow" filter (do a search under "FFDshow").

Did that and it didn't work.
I'm starting to think I'm not capturing sound. How can I tell ?
                      How can I fix it?

                        1) In your "System Tray" (Lower right corner of your desktop), RIGHT-click on theloudspeaker icon ("Volume Control") and select "Open Volume Controls"

                        2) From the "Options" dropdown menu, select "Properties"

                        3) Change "Adjust volume for" from "Playback" to "Recording"

                        4) Make sure that "Line In" and "Auxiliary" are checked (among others)
                        5) Close the "Properties" box and look at the (now says, instead of "Play Control") "Record Control" controls and put a check in the box of the appropriate input source.

Thank you setarip (and everyone) It turns out I had captured audio. The ts files AND the MPEG files both have audio attached to them. I downloaded another player "Media Player Classic" (for MPEG) and "VLC" (for TS) and they all had sound. I guess the problem is within the playback in WMP 10. Worked before-don't know why it doesn't now. Thanks again.
