Read/burn problem

I have a sony external drx 510ul. Its a few years old I know the read/burn speed is slow about 2x.
The problem I have is when I dvd shrink or dycript. it only read at about 0.8x. I have the setting set at max. is this normal? I am trying to talk my wife into buing a 16x burner. But I thik I am lossing the battle. Anyway thanks for all your help

Sounds as it is connected to a USB 1.1 channel.

Yea I screwed up.

Well I put down that I was reading from the sony drive when I wasnt. I read/rip from the dell installed dvd/cd drive then burn to the sony. It was the internal drive that is reading .8x. I tried to find out what the max. read/write setting for drive is but I cant find it. However, I now read/rip from my sony and i get 2x some times 2.4x for the read. so I guess I will just use my sony drive for now. I guess it also works better since my system doesnt seem to be overheating as well.
