    cd/dvd rom is empty

I know I am a newbee, but I have been burning dvd's for a couple of months. I would like to know if any of you have ever had the problem when you insert a dvd movie in your rom.writer that it doesn't pick it up at all and sometimes tells you that the device is empty?

What is the cause and how can it be fixed. If I can't even read/watch the movie, how can I copy it??

    welcome to the forum

older rom drives may not support certain media types (eg: -rw +rw)
or, your rom may be in need of a lens clean (cleaning kits are available).
or, there could be a drive/s configuration &/or compatibility conflict.
or, your rom may also be close to r.i.p. & failing to function properly.
or, as simple as "the rom drive is not connected properly" (cables/power).

some of the more common ones

      To Thinus

"If I can't even read/watch the movie, how can I copy it??"

Is it an ORIGINAL, COMMERCIAL DVD, or "something else"?

Hi Experi-mentor And Setarip. Thanx for the welcoming. I am using a new Siemens laptop fitted with a Nec6500 dual layer dvd writer. The laptop is 3 months old and I have done well over a 100 movies already. I have used -r/+r and rw dvd disks without any problems. It is only some movies I am having the problem with and I can't even watch the movies(can't even read them). I also thought my drive might be dirty and I did use a lens-cleaner - still the same. Is there maybe a typr of "encoding" out there that might cause this problem?

        Cheers.

          as setarip previously questioned,

"Is it an ORIGINAL, COMMERCIAL DVD, or "something else"?"
