total newbie - help!!

I really dont understand the shrink program yet but i think i know the basics, i can burn a dvd. However, i want to know what my prefs should be set to...i have a brand new toshiba m40koo with duel layer burner.

Another thing - when the dvd is 'backed up' and on the harddrive of my computer it seems to be in about thirty pieces, not just the one file. IS this normal?? How do i change this??

Is there anything else i should know as a beginner??
