yup yup enchanter, but heres the deal: using the filters that I am, it takes about 4-1/2 hours per pass. I'm attempting to use divx5. So to generate the first pass log file takes 4-1/2 hours each ep. I then want to look at the log files and say, "mmm mmm, i see, very interesting" and decide that, say, ep 15 is too small and that out of the 4 log files it doesn't total 700Mb, so I can say, "mmm mmm, ok, I think I'll bump the rate of ep 15!"

instead of having to encode both passes (4-1/2 hours * 4eps * 2passes = 36 hours) and say" shit!! ep 15 is too small/large!!" and then take another 4-1/2 hours to redo ep 15 (= 41 hours).

      Damn! 4 hours+ per pass???

I thought 2 hours and a half was the worst I could take with that smootherHQ filter on. What filters are you using? And what fps are you going at?

p.s. Working on a DivX file should be much, much faster than working on VOB files.

        2 fps
        1) hue/saturation/blur
        2) warpsharp
        3) smart smoother

yeah it sucks right? i guess I don't REALLY need warpsharp, but I want these to be perfect. I'm anal about these things...that's why this thread is so long

Basically, you only need the video to look stronger in colour, right? In that case, you should just use the first filter and scrap the rest. Smoother is useful only when your video looks grainy or something like that. This will save you a lot of time and headache.

p.s. What's that Warpsharp filter supposed to do anyway?

sharpens the image by some warping algorithm. applies a matrix to it? I dunno. Its supposed to be a better sharpener. <= filter by Avery Lee

Full screen my vids look grainy (there's a bit of ringing artifacts).
Normal size you can't see em that well. But full screen is what counts right? cuz that's what I'm watching it at! 1024x768

Hmm...I suggest you use only the Saturation filter alone and see how the final result looks like. I am also currently working on a very badly done DivX episode (AMG). Whoever did it ended up with a 200MB file and a 22 kHz, 32kbps and mono MP3 track. Can't do a thing with the audio, but at least I can do something to improve the video.

p.s. With the Saturate and Resizer Filter in use, I can achieve an fps of 55-60. No smoother for me, thanks.

About Maximum quality in divx5, Divx5 cheats a little bit on quality when using b-frames, the b-frames will use a minimum quantizer 2 times larger than the other frames. This can be corrected by changeing some registry settings (I don't remember which, will look them up if you are interrested).

About the log analyzer, sorry I have never tried this tool myself, so I really don't know how it works, but it's my understanding (from reading posting made by the author) that the program can predict divx4/5 file size by reading the logfile, to within 1 MB which is much more precise than divx4 would otherwise be.

@enchanter, AFAIK no such tool exists for divx3.11 sbc encoding, but it's not really relevant because nandub is always very accurate about filesize prediction.

Exactly. Unless you play around with gauge settings too much and alter the values to some really weird ones.

khp, thanks very much, but if I may not see the difference visually, an undersized file isn't really a bad thing. I suppose that's the point of compression.

Enchanter, time for a shameless plug: #anime-fury on dalnet is releasing AMG HQ. So far we've done eps 1 and 2. I'm not sure if those are the eps that you're looking for, but if you're interested come check us out on mirc.

okay, gotta play around with this divx log thingy, or perhaps email the author and ask him.

                          To AnimeCollector

Do you know where I can find Furuba's channel? I need my FB fix and it seems that Akufansubs is running later in their FB releases.

Sorry Enchanter, I don't know where their channel is. Believe me, I've looked.

I also don't think that a new Fruits Basket has come out yet, otherwise I'd have it by now. My mIRC channel is usually quick to snag new releases.

BTW did you ever figure out that divx4log analyzer? It's incredibly hard to get help from doom9. Seems like no one is willing to answer any questions. I need to figure out how in the world to check the comrpessible file size, if that's even possible. Too bad the proggy doesn't give an explicit reference to the file size in, say, bytes.

No idea how the analyser thingy works, but I'm pretty sure a little trial & error always works out to something. Also, I started learning DivX through this website and I started my forum 'hobby' here, so I'm going to stick here and nowhere else. After all, the other forums (DivX & Doom9) are way too crowded.

lol, OK maybe doom9's is'nt the most newbie frendly place on the web, but considering the amount of technial knowledge assembled there, that's hardly a surprise.

Anyway did you read the guide in the divx4 guides section ?.
As I understand it the size number in the common box specifies the size in bytes of the video stream, but as doom9 states in his guide " Also note the BitRate. This value is very important. You want to match it to the value that GKnot gave you"
