i didnt think there would have been? the computer is only 3 months old. ive been burning dvd from my hard drive, use nero, and never have anything running in the background. whats happened was i started using a different brand of dvd-r and they wouldnt work so i returned them to the store i bought them. bought another brand which worked perfectly. then i needed to buy different ones with a printable surface all the way to the centre and when i did these wouldnt work also so i took them back to the store and they refused to take them back, they told me it must be a problem with my firmware as theres no way two different types of media would be faulty. so here i am. is it possible that some media are just not compatible with my drive? ive tried burning at different speeds and they all seem to fail at between 20 & 30%Comment

thats the problem jmet. i cant seem to install the latest firmware. its a philips mt2100 and the drive is a dual layer philips 1640P . as i said before ive selevted the right upgrade and it wont install. for some reason the firmware installed at the moment is 1640B. would that make a difference? the troubleshooter said that it should be 1640KComment

Thank you for providing a specific answer to the question I asked specifically of you, "Is there a specific reason you NEED a firmware update?" - since, until now, you hadn't stated why you felt compelled to seek a firmware update.
I'm glad to hear that you're not one who installs updates "just because they are there" - especially if they are from other than OFFICIAL sites. There is still a great deal of validity to that old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"...
