converting XVID to DIVX 5.0

Hi I have search quickly through the forums but couldn't find an answer to my problem,
I occasionally have a need to convert an XVID encoded movie to a DIVX 5.0 to play in my Philps stand alone player.
At me moment the way I do it is to convert the XVID back to a DVD with vsoDIVX to DVD and then re-rip it with the DIVX codec I need, but this is a rarther long process taking a couple of hours to convert to DVD and about the same back to DIVX.
Is there a better faster way to do this?
Any answer or redirection to a thread would be appreciated.

If you have a Philips DVP 642, there's no need to convert XviD to DivX. There is, however, the need to eliminate the use of "QPELs" (quarter pixels) in the XviD file, if you want it to playback...

You can use mpeg4modifier to change some of the attributes of the file in question without re-encoding. Only takes a minute or two. If you need to re-encode use Virtualdub>or one of it's variants< to re-encode the xvid file. No need to convert to dvd and back to avi. IMO xvid is better and faster than divx and it's free.

My model No. is Philps DVP640k/75, it can play some XVID files just not a couple I have. I have tried mpeg4modifier but it crashes.

My pc is a AMD XP 2600 1 gig ram windows xp 80gig segate HD.

Any other programs that can do the same job?

Then follow the suggestion by "tigerman8u" and use VirtualDub (or VirtualDubMOD) to convert the file...

never crashed for me. it is a small (93k) executable file.

Just an update.

I tried changing the 4CC's using Nic's fourCC changer that came with the XVID I installed and also unpacking the with Mpegmodifier, it still didn't play.
SO i searched the Net and Came up with this guide http://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm
Using VirtualDub it works well and takes around 1/2 hr.
