noob question on mpeg conversion

Hi, this is is my first post here so hello all.

I have a problem using WinTv2000, it records video as mpeg2, (I think as mpeg2 transport) and plays back fine within the aplication but opening any wintv2000 created video file with mediaplayer or moviemaker gives a jerky playback and then crashes.

I want to retain broadcast quality, do a little basic editing and then burn the content to DVD so, question:

Do I need to convert the file to a more usuable mpeg2 format? Would I use an encoder for this and if so, which one?

Yes, it might be an idea to convert it to DVD. See here. Perhaps the easiest is the TMPGEnc plus method on that site.

use avicodec or gspot (both free) to see if your mpeg 1/2 is a compliant dvd mpeg
