"Finalization failed" - still use .VOB files?

I'm at a univeristy, and just purchased a DVD / VHS unit to convert some of our tapes. A few (too many) times, after tediously burning 8 or so 1/2 hour programs to a DVD-R disc, editting the menu and then clicking "Finalize disc" the finalization step fails. I can read the DVD as a data disc, and view the .IFO, .VOB files. Any hope of reusing these without re-recording?

if you have a dvd burner in a pc use the excellent free program dvddecrypter to finalize your dvd/s, if for some reason this doesn't work copy the dvd/s to your hard drive and reburn. this can be fixed without re-encoding/ losing your project. you state the vob/s and ifo/s file/s are there. you should also see bup file/s. bup files are back-ups of the ifo files

If you were in the 4 hr mode on your standalone and recorded 4+ hours you probably filled up the DVD. On my standalone if you fill up the DVD it won't finalize most of the time . leave a little room.
