DVD drive plays movies but won't read data

Hello - I have a Toshiba SD-R2002 CD/DVD combo on my laptop that performs well in all other respects but won't read data DVDs. When subjected to a data DVD the drive simply 'kick-starts' over and over. Never an error message -or any message- until I manually eject the media... then I'm told to please put a disk in.

I'm running MS/WIN-2K Pro on a T23 IBM Thinkpad. I have a gig of RAM and the latest firmware for the drive.

Colleagues that have this same drive (and I've exchanged mine with them) read just fine. They have MS/WIN-XP.
Data DVDs I butn on my Memorex + and - RW burner fair the same.

Short of rebuilding my laptop with XP, what will help me?

    All help is appreciated!

Hi and welcome to the forum, OldpglyR!

Your drive that can't read DVDs - is this the one your colleagues can deal with if it's installed in theirs laptops?

        ASPI installed?

For years people have had various problems with the so called ASPI layer, which is required by many Windows CD-R software’s. This article aims to successfully install a good and working ASPI setup.

Not sure if it was already or not 'cause Adaptec said it was "up to date" but after rebooting still no read.
