How to add a .ssa subtitle file to .avi file?

Hi, I have a .ssa subtitle file, and I want to be able to link it to the .avi file, so the subtitles are enabled. I have looked around here, at the links, guides, but all the terminology confuses me, and I might have overlooked the answer to my question, so don't be too harsh on me

Does anybody have a link to a guide on how to do this? Or could someone guide me through this themselves? Thanks.

im actually a beginner myself, but i found a way on how to do it, you need a special program called virtualdub with the subtitler plugin:

with this just read the readme and itll guide you, very simple.

however i have a problem myself, i have an avi file with .ssa subtitle file, i was able to hardcode the subtitle file into the video with virtualdub, however when i tried to save the filtered version it showed that it would take up almost 800,000mb! i know i might have done something wrong. some one please help, thanks.

The default output for VDub is uncompressed .avi, you'll need to select Video -> Full processing Mode and also Video -> Compression to set up the compression codec.

thanks thats the first response ive had in a while, i figured it out, but now i have a different problem:

when i open a certain a video file in virtualdub i get this:
"Virtualdub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file..."
"virtualdub will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values..."
"This may introduce up to 23721 ms of skew from the video stream"
"(bitrate: 125.7 (plus or minus)* 16.4 kbps))

the above are just fractions of the message, it tells me how to fix it if i find it unacceptable, which i do because the audio starts a tad faster than the video, it says i have to decompress the entire audio stream into an uncompressed wave file and then recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. all of this i do not understand how to do.

*the plus minus part is a written interpretation of the symbol, which is a plus sign on top of a minus sign.

hmmm, i also find that if i put audio to full processing mode, then it fixes the problem, but will this mess with the final filtered piece?
