    AVI to MPEG?????????????

OK, folks I am new to this so please bare with me. I have a movie in AVI format that I want to convert so I can play it on a DVD player. My DVD player says it plays mpeg and vcd's, what is the best program I can use to convert it and what format would be best to convert it to for this purpose?

TMPGEnc (Other posters will undoubtedly favor other solutions), set for "MPEG1-VideoCD"...

      I tried that

See, I tried that but there is no sound and I have tried a couple things that were posted on the site under conversion and nothing still. The problem is that it reads the file and then the sound is at 56k and for some reason it won't give me the sound when I encode the stupid thing.

        Load the .AVI into VirtualDub

From under the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

Post (here) EVERYTHING (audio and video) that is listed, or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

            If in fact you've gotten TMPGEnc to generate video from a DivX v.5.0-compressed file, I believe you are the first (and thusfar only) one. Every other posting at these forums regarding TMPGEnc and DivX v.5.0 encoded files has indicated that they were able to generate audio but NO video. It's not that I doubt you - but I do ;>}

Be that as it may, first I would ask you if you've successfully played the original .AVI file from beginning to end. If so, I'd suggest that (assuming, in addition to the DivX 5,0 codec, you have either v.3.11alpha or 4.xx installed on your system) you load the .AVI into VirtualDub and resave it, using one of the other DivX codecs. While you're at it, you should change the audio to 44,100Hz.

TMPGEnc, in the MPEG1-Video CD mode, should then be happy to process both video and audio for you.

                Here's the "purple" prose:

                1) Load the .AVI into VirtualDub

                2) Set both "Video" and "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"

                3) From under the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose either the DivX 3.11 or 4.xx codec (whichever you may have installed)

                4) From under the "Audio" menu, select "Conversion and change the sampling rate to 44,100

                5) From under the "Audio" menu, select "Compression" and choose an MP3 STEREO (NOT monaural) 44,100 setting

                6) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" and save your file with a new filename

                7) Use this new file with TMPGEnc

                    VCD...

By the way, many standalone players are very finicky about which brands (if any) of CD-R or R/W CD they will recognize.

Go here to check the capabilities of your specific standalone player:

Video forums, video software downloads, guides, blu-ray players and media.

                      Another Problem

I did everything you said to do and I ran into a snag I got sound but no picture with the Divx 5 codec. Is their a certain one I have to use for that AVI?

                          So then

So I have to un-install the Divx 5 codec or can I run them inconjunction with the 4 series?
