MPG (MPEG) vs. AVI quality issue

I have a problem. I download and frequently use both MPG and AVI formats but haven't noticed a difference really. Which would be a better format for me to use on average for normal DVD playback and conversion? I like my video files to be full quality or as close as I can get them. Anyone got a clue and supporting information to go with this? Email me at seertiongoriah@hotmail.com if you can help me please.
