    Auto Trimming/Cropping

    Merry Xmas to all

I am new to video capture. My method is to use a DVDR Combi which works super for playback on telly but when I play the Mpeg2 on pc I get horrid fuzzy lines along the edge of the picture (sometimes all four sides). Is this normal? How may I avoid this?

edit (have not been thinking clearly today ):

there are 2 ways you could do this:

      1. use 'media player classic' to play the files & zoom in, getting rid of the edges.

      or

      2. download & install ffdshow, go start-->program files-->ffdshow-->video decoder configuration

go down the list, to 'raw video', and set it from 'disabled' to 'all supported'. click (tick the box) 'crop' inthe left column, you can set how many pixels to crop from each side. play with media player of your choice

Regular TV's have overscan which hides the edges. If you are recording an analogue source then there may be some distortion around the edges which will be hidden on a TV. Play it back on a PC or another device which doesn't suffer from overscan and you will see it. Same would be true for viewing the analogue source directly though.

Autocropping as I understand it detects black borders, so I don't think it would work. You would need to crop manually. Of course that means that part of the actual picture will be hidden by overscan now.

That is a relief to know there’s nowt wrong with my new DVDR! I will use ffdshow for playback on my pc, thanks anonymez. By the way, which program crops best for mpeg2? Can Womble’s mpeg2vcr do the job? Thank you for explaining the difference between telly and pc playback celtic_druid. Much obliged guys.

ffdshow will crop mpeg-2 as well. the 'raw video' setting makes sure of it
