I have read the article on DMA and mine shows it is using muti word DMA mode 2. Is there a way to upgrade this?
DMA to Ultra DMA?

Multi-Word DMA mode 2 = 16.5 MB/s max transfer rate
Ultra DMA Mode 5 = max 100 MB/s transfer rate
For Ultra DMA mode 5, the support from all of the components are required i.e. HDD/Drives, Controller, OS and conductor cable.
Any one of these being not compliant will put it into other compatible modes.
Since the OS detects it, it cannot be changed. -
The MW DMA is probably a function of the speed (and age) of your PC. Probably nothing that can be done.

16x burning or reading is 22 MB/s
"The result was the creation of a new type of DMA transfer modes, which were called Ultra DMA modes."
"Double transition clocking is what allows Ultra DMA mode 2 to have a maximum transfer rate of 33.3 MB/s despite having a clock cycle time identical to "regular DMA" multiword mode 2, which has half that maximum."
I don't like the sound of 16MB/s, something's not kosher.
