AVI to DVD what format is best

    Hi all,

After scrolling through the internet i cannot find a simple answer so i gather there isn't one and you have to become a whizz kid in order to complete a simple task.

What i would like to do is convert an AVI file that i recorded on a camcorder to a format that can be viewed on a dvd player and yes it will be burned onto a DVD. Can anyone tell me what are my best options available and will i loose any quality of the original recording when i convert the file?

This subject is really puzzling me and anyone's help is much appreciated.

my prefered method is tmpgenc plus. if your source is 29.97 fps you can use the free version of tmpgenc to create a dvd along with tmpgenc dvd author's 30 day trialware.

Or DivX2DVD. That is freeware, get it here. Just open the file, specify PAL or NTSC, select widescreen or fullscreen (or leave it all on Auto) and hit start.

generally yes, however, if you are lucky to have a dvd player that supports divx playback and your avi has this compression you don't have to do anything.

1 convert the avi to a compliant dvd mpeg 1/2 (follow LT's guide)
2 author the mpeg 1/2 with a program such as Tmpgenc dvd author
3 burn with your favorite software

                  Thanks for the replys everyone.

I am starting to get the hang of it but still have not managed to convert to dvd yet. I feel i have been pointed in the right direction and will now look into the guides that have been pointed out.

                  Thanks again

My method is probably the easiest, but does not give menus. If you didn't want menus, try that.

What I suggested here is also a straight forward easy navigation to your final DVD with menus and is a freeware too.

Plus it allows you to put multiple movies in one DVD with individual subtitles.
