    OMG. IT WORKS!!!!!

SyncMaster connects to the DVI ouptut (using DVI/VGA converter). TV connects to the S-Video ouput. Only desktop shows on the TV. At this point I go into the Catalyst software and, lo and behold, there is now a "clone" option. Clone selected. Voila! Video appears on monitor AND television. How simple yet how arcane. You'd think that ATI would say something about how to do this.

Oh well, at least problem is solved. Thanks to all of you for your time and effort.

Thanks, Chewy. I'll try it tonight. But how will I be able to access (close, etc) the video player window if it's on the TV? Will my mouse go over there if I drag it to the right of my monitor?

No, you just extend desktop, the tv will be blank until you drag over the player window, then you control the computer from the monitor but watch the
outcome from the TV, we do this with digital karaoke, playing from laptops, we load the next songs in a playlist while someone in singing to the lyrics
          on the TV.

say hi to setarip, I google

Thanks, Chewy. It works as you described.

I'm not sure which way I'm going to go (clone or extend). But it's nice to know I have a choice.
