please help a newbie with burning dvd's

We just got a new camcorder that is a mini dv one. It is a Sony DCR-HC46. I would like to convert the mini dv's onto DVD's. I just don't know how to do. I thought our laptop came with a DVD burner, but I found out today I was wrong. So we will probably purchase an external DVD burner. Is there a special program that I need to get to burn the DVD's. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Hi and welcome to the forum

There are many burning softwares. One of the best is Imgburn, but it can use only image files like ISO. It is not able to burn single files. It is free and you can read more informations here

Thanks so much for the info. I'm sorry, but I don't know about different files such as ISO. What kind of file would it be if I was taking it from my camcorder and putting it on a DVD? I'm really new to this so forgive me for not knowing all the terminolgy-yet.

Well, first u hav to import ur video into ur computer(via Firewire card preferably). Then u need 2 make a DVD from these video files.Usually ur DVD will have a Video_TS and an Audio_TS folder. Now u can make an ISO from these using Imgtool Classic and burn with Imgburn.Alternatively,u can burn the Video_TS and Audio_Ts using Nero.

Did the laptop come with burning software?

If you are tight on money you can use what came with the laptop (may be slow, but is reliable) until you have money to buy a decent program.
