Burned dvd's playback on standalone problems

I'm trying to burn some dvd's to watch on my tv 'cos cramming 4-5 people around the pc monitor is a hassle, but when i try to play them i only have play, pause and stop functions. Is this normal or is there some way to make the dvd let me ff, rw and all that good stuff? Any help greatly appreciated.

first time i just sent the file as an mpg to the cd drive and it wrote it quick and accurate but when i put it on the dvd=r i used TMPGencoder and NTI-DVD maker gold just the 2 step burn because my writer shows dvds as RAW 0 space available or used unless i use a dvd burner but then i tried converting the file to an ISO and burned it using IMG Burner and that just rendered the disk useless my stanalone shows sumthin on it but won't let me access it and my writer just shows it as RAW same as above would maybe converting to a VOB file like the commercial dvds are help? Thanks for your answer would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions
