The first time I realized I needed to update my firmware was when I had purchased new blanks and they were a different speed rating. My burner did not recognize the newer discs and had to have a firmware update to do so. I was worried about doing it (fear I would screw up something!) It was very easy, I did do it in safe mode just to be on the safe side. No problems!

      Good Luck,

you never know if someone is using buggy ide drivers and that can cause a bad flash, probably won't kill the drive, just make bad burns, even nec and others say to disable dma(unloads those drivers and uses slow pio mode)
but the easiest way is boot into safe mode and then you get the added benefit of eliminating a lot of unseen programs that run in the background at normal bootup.

Pls note following instructions for update procedure:

Connect drive to secondary IDE channel as Master

Disconnect all slave hardware from IDE secondary Master

          Use standard UDMA-2 IDE cable

          Update in Windows "Safe Mode"

Under Windows 2000 & XP login as administrator

Update without DMA mode, under Windows XP & 2000 in the device manager - "IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers", you can switch from DMA to PIO mode

Disconnect all external USB/ FireWire devices.

Deactivate virusscanners, active desktop programs and packetwriting agents

Do not turn off power during the updating process.

Note: Warranty will be lost during false updating procedure,
the official update procedure from nec germany

i have never seen that before myself. i think you'll have to burn it onto a cd, then boot the disc. perhaps chewy or someone else can confirm this?

I downloaded the iso, tried to mount with daemon tools and open,
it's a crock. Renaming to zip didn't work.

                But RAR did!

might be some sort boot cd, because the bin code file is way too big, but full of mids, dos flasher not a windows one, bin is too big for a floppy?

I doubt if I can make a boot cd out of it but I will try

                    dell oem? hp and others

page just created, maybe they will post a firmware soon.

edit: I just went thru this a few days ago and linked a guy to the crossflash which takes you
to a 4166, but seems dangerous?

based on what chewy is saying it seems like you might want to leave this for now katono. you can always check at a later date for firmware. you don't have burning issues anyway

BTW chewy, that link is for a GWA, not GSA drive

I guess this thread is my double dog dare, challenge accepted,
first what is the present firmware?

                            regarding gwa vs gsa

GWA models are OEM LG writers. They are really not the same as standard retail ones (GSA). OEM models are custom made by LG for various computer manufacturers who intend to bundle them with their systems. LG does not provide firmware support for them (which is why you cannot find updates for your model on LG's webpages) but expects the computer manufacturer it made the drives for to do so. The features are not the same, usually DVD-RAM support is missing. These models should not be on sale as bare units.
there's another auusie who like LG's

aha the dangerous brothers have spoken, LT, we blew it!

that file does make a bootable cd

right but it's a GSA model, so according to that there should be something for it? how are people using that iso file?
