    codec problems

i downloaded an avi, and whe i started it the MP started to look for a codec. than, apparently it found one, and started downloading it. when it was done, tho, it said it could not install the codec, and now i can play the file only without sound. what do i do?

You need a codec to play it. Most likely it is a DivX file, so installing one should remedy the problem.

I normally suggest a combo of 3.11 + 4.12 (Not allowing it to play 3.11 contents). However, if your movie was created with DivX5, you will need that codec installed. But I believe it is still rare. Most experienced encoders have always preferred 3.11, so you should be fine with this.

By right, it should, though there will definitely be a quality difference between the two decoders. I will still stress that 3.11-encoded movies should be played back using 3.11 and nothing else. The same goes with 4.x and 5.

Looking at the file description in Nandub - does it say you have ac3 sound? Prob need this audio codec. You can d/l those here:

Load the file in Virtualdub, post the information here. Note: Backwards compatibility in the DIVX codecs are really poor. Follow Enchanter's steps, divx 3.11 and possibly divx 4.12

A lot, if not most, media is still encoded in divx 3.11

If you have an AC3 soundtrack you'll need the AC3 codec which can be found in the NIMO codec pack.

                        Here's what I would try:

                        1) uninstall divx 5.0 or 5.01 (Also note: many people have problems with divx 5.01, if this problem occured after updating to divx 5.01, uninstall it and revert back to divx 5.0) otherwise then:

Follow Enchanter's steps, divx 3.11 and possibly(only install divx 4.12 if you have problems after installing divx 3.11) (do not enable divx 4.12 to play divx 3.11 content)

A lot, if not most, media is still encoded in divx 3.11

In addition to the video being compressed with the DivX v.5. 1 video, the audio was compressed using DivX audio (tag 0161), which is installed as part of the DivX v.3.11alpha codec package...
