CPU 100% when playing video files?

Really quite stuck with this. Only started happening a few weeks back. Whenever i now try to play video files through DivX, WMP or Quicktime my cpu goes up to 100% effectively slowing my pc to a halt and refuses to play said video?
I've tried restored my computer to a previous date, uninstalled video codecs and then udated again and i've got the latest driver for my graphics card. So very lost at what it could be...? Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

try playing the files with VLC, will help in locating the source of the problem

Specs?

Pentium IV 2.26GHz,
1GB DDR PC2700 Kingston Ram,
NIVDIA GeForce 6200 512MB.

Thanks for the reply. Download vlc but the same happens, 98-100% CPU usage, and just have to end task which takes it back to normal? All i want to do is watch some Naruto ha. Dont quite understand why its happening now, as not changes anything...? On another note DVDs work, all games and music applications too, just video file that mess up.

what type of video files exactly? which container (eg. avi, mkv, mp4, etc)? the fact that DVD's work while VLC doesn't is making me think it's the files or something deeper

Files

Most of the files are avi, as tend to use DivX. However for others like mpeg4, i use my other players like quicktime, whichever suits the correct type of codec. In properties the type of most files are listed as 'Video clip' and the pic symbol is the Win Media player icon. It's strange to me because i've never had a problems with this, and all files worked before hand?? Hope this help a little, once again thanks for the replys.

open the file with virtualdubmod, click file-->file information, and post here

latest directx? this is something i've seen before with the 6600; try downgrading nvidia drivers

Other details...

Just thought of a few other details that might inlighten. Whenever i boot up Windows, the file folder system32 loads up on the desktop. This has only started recently too. Would a virus etc cause any of this and even affect video file playback? Cheers

I would be nervous anytime a machine starts to act strange on start up, especially if it involved major system folder. Boot into safe mode and run virus, spyware and malware checks. It may yield not results but better safe than sorry.

Tried Advice

Okay update...
I booted up in safe mode and system32 didn't appear on desktop first off. Then i ran virus checker, ad-aware, and spybot. These showed a few items to delete, and proceeded to do so. Freed up some space on c: as well, because thought that could be an issue(was only 2gb left).

Then tried few video files again. They actually appeared but with no sounds this time..? Changed back to normal boot up setting, system32 reappeared and file again where back to there 98-100% state!

go start-->run, type "msconfig" without quotes, hit enter, click the startup tab, post screenshots or list everything in there (just startup items)

I could be putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 but if in safe mode the movie played but with no sound and the system32 folder did not load up. then when back in normal mode the system32 folder appeared and cpu usage went up to 100%... this gets me thinking: Could there be a conflict due to an audio codec? Are you using an all inclusive codec pack? If you are, I have seen posts before regarding conflicts caused by too many codecs. Load only the codecs you need, not large bundles of them.
