Convert video frame to jpeg

I have a video clip which was taken on a still camera by mistake. The photographer wishes to take one of the frames (the best one), and convert it to a jpeg file. I understand that the resolution won't be very good, but the clip was taken in a foreign land and cannot be retaken.

I have Intervideo WinDVD Creator and some other software items. Can anyone explain how to accomplish this task?

There's lots of software that can do this, including most software players. Read the help file on WinDVD Creator under "capture".

But you can also use VirtualDub.

I have reviewed Intervideo WinDVD Creator (IWC) under Caption, but I can't find anything about taking a snapshot of a video clip. The clip only lasts about 2 seconds, and the first frame is the frame I'm after. The clip has the extension of .avi. Can anyone give more detail about the procedure for getting the snapshot and converting it to a jpg file?

It looks like people are suggesting VirtualDub, perhaps because it is easier to use than IWC? I desire not to install more stuff on my computer, but if that is the better way to go, then, so be it. Besides being free, what advantage does it offer?

I hope you are looking under "Capture" I have just the base WinDVD not the Creator, but the Capture on it works well (the little camera button).

try it, no instalation for virtualdub.

First, because my version of Intervideo WinDVD (player, not creator) is apparently a light version, it isn't able to permit a snapshot. This icon is always gray.

Therefore, I downloaded VirtualDub. I am able to open the .avi clip, and select the first frame, but I don't understand how to save that frame so that it can then be converted to a .jpg file. I assume that the above quotation from LT Columbo is supposed to be a procedure for achieving my goal, but I can't follow it. Can someone elaborate more? What is virtualdubMOD? Where do I find "snapshot source frame"?

As Lt Columbo said, with your .avi file loaded in Virtualdubmod, select video, snapshot source frame, or hit "shift" and "1".
"save as type" offers you the choice of bmp,tga,png.
Choose bmp, you can always convert it to .jpg later with another app
Pick a filename, save

I did the first two steps, but under Video, there is no Snapshot Source Frame. Hitting "shift" and "1" did nothing. By the way, my version of VirtualDub is 1.6.15. Have there been changes which deleted this function? I do find "copy source frame to clipboard" but how do I use that?

probaby won't matter since problem is solved, but while virtualdubmod has more features, virtualdub-mpeg2 is up to date, less buggy, and most relevant in your case, faster seeking

really only difference between plain vdub & vdub-mpeg2 is mpeg2/vob and wmv/asf input

I downloaded virtualdub-mpeg2 and tried it. Just as with virtualdub, it doesn't seem to allow for Snapshot of Source Frame, as vituraldubMOD does, which is an essential function for my need. Did I miss something?
