DVD Ripping? Legal? please help

I live in the US, I want to import my dvd's(ex.The Punisher) into my new 30gb Ipod w/video.

I see there alot of DVD ripping software out there. Is it legal to rip dvd's (removing the css to do so) for my own personal use??
