What format is the video you are trying to work on? If it is AVI, you need to make sure you have the appropriate decompressor installed. If it is mpg2, you need to make sure you have the right filter installed. Having a software DVD player installed will do.

"If it is mpg2, you need to make sure you have the right filter installed."

If it's MPEG2, the post will get an error message from VirtualDub - which doesn't DIRECTLY accept MPEG2 format... (Besides, the poster indicated that it's an AVI file)

Oh, my bad. I read through it quickly, and answered too quickly. Sorry about that.

In order to determine which codec you need for a particular .AVI, you should do the following:

              1) Load the file into VirtualDub

              2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

              3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

If you want to be able to view this video, you'll have to download and install the DivX5 (v.5.0 or 5.01) codec...
