i have avi files with no picture

i have downloaded some avi files with sound but no picture.the codec used is not recognized . what can i do?

Depends on what codec you already have loaded on your computer. If you have 3.11 try and install 4.12 (telling it not to handle 3.11 files). If that doesn't work it prob is divx 5. But be advised that if you install divx 5 it overwrites divx 4. There are patches that allow both codecs to live peacefully on your computer at the same time.

In order to determine which codec you need for a particular .AVI, you should do the following:

1) Load the file into VirtualDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box
