Computer problem in burning?

I was able to burn DVDs using both Roxio's EMC 7.5 or 1clickdvdpro. The external drive stopped working. My computer wouldn't read it. It was attached through the USB port. I've bought two DVD dual layer writers since. Neither will burn. They will read and play, but not burn. Roxio's EMC tells me it's a media error, 03/0c/00 and other times 05/21/02, invalid illegal procedure, I think. 1clickdvd also fails to burn. I haven't installed any new programs. I've used Sony, Maxell, two kinds of verbatim and I can't burn. It can read, but not burn. It's not an encryption issue. As I said, it worked fine up to a week ago. which is why I think it's my computer. I've done virus scans, spyware, rootkits scans, updated windows.

I'm stumped.
