Virtualdub and DivX codec will make you a happy person. Add to that Radium MP3 codec so that you can convert the audio to, you guessed it, the space-efficient MP3 tracks.

There are many articles that can help you get started here: http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/index.html#edit

Basically, you open the .dat or .mpg file in Virtualdub. Under video tab, you set it to Full Processing Mode and then, select a compressor and set the parameters. The DivX codec is the most commonly used compressor. Under the audio tab, you select Full Processing Mode as well and select a compressor again. In this case, the Radium MP3 codec will help you to make the space-eficient MP3 tracks. When all is setup, go to File -> Save as .AVI and give the new file a name.

The above-method is a basic way of using Virtualdub (short of applying filters). You will require the DivX and Radium MP3 codecs installed in your system. I recommend further readings to get a much better idea on how to properly setup the DivX parameters (It's not as simple as it was back in the early days of 3.11). Good luck.
