How to go from DVR-MS to MPEG?

I just spend the weekend trying to understand the intructions to 2 dvd authoring programs, and my mind has pretty much turned to mush. It seems simple from reading the intructions but once I get started, I just can't get anything done. All I need is to get some programs recorded on Windows Media Center, edit out commercials, add ckapter markers and menus, and burn to disc.
I have an HP Media Center PC, it came with Sonic My DVD, which can import Media Center files...the problem is it's painfully slow, and prone to stalling, and not very flexible. Are there any freeware problems that will allow you to take programs from Media Center, edit them, and create menus? I've tried searching, but I get a ton of results that don't address what I'm after...

    Thank you....

      Thanks. I'll give it try.
It's frustrating to sink so much money into a pc, only to find out that you can't do what you were led to believe you'd be able to do with it, unless you shell out even more money...
